How to play, settings, troubleshooting and privacy.
The short version
Everything in one line.
Climb, steer, land. Hit riders from above. Grab their eggs. Stay out of the lava. Your very first game starts with a guided First Flight that walks you through each move; you can replay it any time from How to Play.
Controls
Choose one in Settings or from the pause menu.
Tap sides (the default)
Touch the left half of the screen to flap left, the right half to flap right. Hold to keep climbing that way. Touch both halves to rise straight up.
One Thumb
Hold anywhere to climb, slide left or right to steer, let go to dive. Made for playing with one hand.
Stick + flap
Slide one thumb to steer and run along ledges; tap the FLAP button with the other. Turn on Swap sides in Settings to put the stick on the right.
Game controllers and keyboards
Pair a Bluetooth controller in your device's Settings, then just play: stick or d-pad steers, A, B or the right trigger flaps, Menu pauses. On an iPad keyboard, arrow keys or A/D steer, space or up arrow flaps, Esc pauses.
The rules
How a joust is won, and what scores.
Higher lance wins
When you meet a rider, be even slightly higher and they're unseated; be lower and you lose a life. Level lances bounce apart with a clang.
Riders
Raiders (round caps, violet bats) 300 points, Marauders (horns, rust bats) 600, Warlords (white crests, steel-blue bats) 1,000.
Eggs
An unseated rider leaves an egg. Collect eggs for 200, 400, 600, then 800 points each in a row within a wave, plus 300 for catching one in midair. An egg rocks and flashes before it hatches; a fresh mount then carries the rider off as a tougher enemy.
Waves
Clear every rider and egg to finish a wave. Gauntlet waves (3, 7, 11…) pay 2,500 if you clear them without losing a life. Nest waves (every fourth) start as a clutch of eggs.
Lava
Falling into the lava costs a life. Heat rising off the pits slows a low fall, and the game warns you with LAVA BELOW. From wave 3, geysers erupt from the pits: the lava bubbles and glows where one is coming.
The wyvern
From wave 2, if a wave drags on for about a minute, a wyvern comes hunting (you get a warning first). Touching it is deadly except from above: two blows on its back bring it down for 2,000 points.
Lives
You start with 4 and earn another every 25,000 points. After each lost life the game says why, and the game-over card adds them up.
Practice, Relaxed speed and pausing
Taking it at your own pace.
Practice (title screen) has harmless riders, no lives lost and nothing recorded. It starts at half speed; change that from its pause menu.
Relaxed speed (Settings or the pause menu) runs a game at three quarters speed. Those scores go in your Hall of Fame, marked R, but not to Game Center, so world rankings stay fair.
Pausing: the pause button sits beside the playfield. Leaving the app pauses the game, and every resume counts down 3-2-1. If your phone locks or iOS closes the app, your game is saved: the title screen offers Continue.
Hall of Fame and Game Center
Scores on your device and worldwide.
Your ten best scores are kept on this device with your initials (use the arrows; hold one to scroll). The Hall of Fame also shows lifetime stats. Settings can erase the list (it can't be undone); lifetime stats, achievements and Game Center are not affected. The Hall of Fame also lists the seven achievements, and Share on the game-over card sends your score to a friend.
World Rankings and Achievements use Apple's Game Center. If they don't open, sign in to Game Center in your device's Settings app, then come back. Game Center is optional; everything else works without it.
Settings
What each one does.
Controls, Swap sides, Game speed
As described above.
Sounds, Music, Vibration
Sounds are the effects during play and follow your device's silent setting; Music plays on the title screen, which also has a music button. Vibration appears on iPhone only.
Reduce motion
Follows your device's Reduce Motion setting unless you change it here: no flicker, blinking, sparks or steam.
Support and Privacy buttons
They open this website. A grown-up check (press and hold for two seconds) comes first, so children don't wander into a browser.
Troubleshooting
Common questions.
No sound
Check that your device isn't in silent mode and that Sounds is on in Settings.
The game won't turn upright
Lancewing plays in landscape only, on iPhone and iPad.
Too fast?
Try Practice, the First Flight (How to Play), or Relaxed speed.
Text too big or too small
Menus follow your device's text size; long cards scroll, and their main buttons stay at the bottom.
Contact
How to reach us.
Email support@utilava.com for support requests, bug reports and feedback; we usually reply within one business day. You can also use the Contact page.
Include your device model, iOS version, the wave you were on, and what happened.
Privacy
The short version.
No accounts, no ads, no purchases, no analytics. Scores and settings stay on your device. Once a day the game reads a small file on utilava.com to learn whether a new version is out; the request carries nothing about you. Details are in the Lancewing section of our Privacy Policy.
