Working it out in your head

For 20%, move the decimal point one place and double it: on $64, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80. For 15%, take the 10% and add half of it: $6.40 plus $3.20 is $9.60.

How much to tip

At sit-down restaurants in the US, 15 to 20% of the bill is the usual range, and 20% is common for good service. Customs differ abroad: in much of Europe service is often included in the bill and rounding up is enough, and in Japan tipping isn't expected. When in doubt, check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.

The traditional rule is to tip on the amount before tax. On a $100 subtotal with 8% tax, 20% of the subtotal is $20.00, and 20% of the $108 total is $21.60. Either is fine; this calculator tips on whatever amount you enter.

Splitting the bill

Some totals don't divide evenly into cents. A $212 bill with an 18% tip is $250.16, which splits into four shares of exactly $62.54, but $100 split three ways is $33.33 each with a cent left over, so one person pays $33.34.

FAQ

  • Before or after tax? — Either way works: enter whichever amount you want to tip on.
  • Does it round each share? — Shares are shown to the cent; with uneven splits, someone may need to add a cent.
  • Are my numbers stored? — No. The math runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
