Paying while you're there
In the United States, shop prices usually leave out sales tax, which is added at the register and varies by state and city. Restaurant bills expect a tip, often 15 to 20 percent. Hotels and gas stations may place a temporary hold on your card larger than the final bill.

When paying a US hotel or shop with a European card, choose to be charged in dollars, not euros. The euro option is dynamic currency conversion, priced at the merchant's rate rather than your card's.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 1.0900 dollars to the euro. A $200 hotel bill converted at the mid-market rate is €183.49. If the hotel's terminal converts it for you at 1.0355, you pay €193.14, almost €10 more for the same night.
