About USD to GBP
Who uses this route
Americans traveling to the United Kingdom, students paying British tuition and companies paying UK staff or suppliers convert dollars to pounds.
Paying while you're there
In the UK, shop prices include VAT, so what you see on the shelf is what you pay. Contactless payment is accepted almost everywhere, including buses and the London Underground. Restaurants often add a service charge to the bill; check before tipping on top.
Worth knowing
Exchange counters in airports and tourist areas advertise "no commission" but build their profit into the rate. Compare the pounds you get against the mid-market rate shown here. Banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own pound notes, worth the same as Bank of England notes; they're accepted across the UK but can be harder to change back abroad.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 0.7700 pounds to the dollar. A counter offering 0.7238, 6% lower, turns $600 into £434.28 instead of £462.00. A card with no foreign transaction fee usually comes much closer to the mid-market rate.
