Paying while you're there
American prices usually leave out sales tax, added at the register, and restaurants expect a tip, often 15 to 20 percent, so the bill is higher than the menu suggests. Contactless payment is widespread, but some places still ask for a signature or a ZIP code.

A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 1.3000 dollars to the pound. A $150 dinner then costs £115.38. On a card with a 3% non-sterling fee, it costs £118.85, before the tip you add to the bill.
