Who uses this route
Indians working and studying across the euro area, in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy and elsewhere, send euros home to family and savings. Companies also pay Indian suppliers and freelancers in euros.
How the money arrives
Transfers usually go to an Indian bank account by account number and IFSC. Inside the euro area, euro payments are cheap and quick, but a payment that leaves for India goes through international banking, where fees and rate margins apply.
Worth knowing
Many euro-area countries write numbers with a decimal comma (1.234,56), while India writes 1,234.56 and groups larger amounts in lakhs. Read amounts carefully when a quote, an invoice and a bank statement each use a different style. Students heading to Germany often fund a blocked account from India before they arrive; that's the reverse route, INR to EUR.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 104.00 rupees to the euro. A provider charges €3 and converts at 102.96 to send €800: €797 at 102.96 delivers ₹82,059, about ₹1,141 or 1.4% less than the mid-market ₹83,200.
