About USD to EUR
Who uses this route
Americans traveling to Europe, studying there or buying from European shops convert dollars to euros. It is one of the most traded currency pairs in the world, so the mid-market rate is always easy to check.
Paying while you're there
Cards are accepted almost everywhere in the euro area, and contactless payment is common. When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in dollars, choose euros: that offer, dynamic currency conversion, uses the merchant's own rate, which is usually worse than your card's.
Worth knowing
Many euro countries write prices with a decimal comma and the symbol after the number, as in 12,50 €. Check whether your card charges a foreign transaction fee; many travel cards don't.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 0.9200 euros to the dollar. An airport counter offering 0.8556, 7% lower, turns $500 into €427.80 instead of €460.00. Changing a small amount there and the rest at an ATM in euros usually costs less.
