About GBP to INR

Who uses this route

Britain has one of the largest Indian communities outside India. Pounds go home for family support, weddings and festivals, property and savings in India, and to parents who live there part of the year.

How the money arrives

Transfers are usually paid into an Indian bank account by account number and IFSC, the 11-character code that identifies the branch. Check the IFSC on the recipient's chequebook or bank app before the first transfer: a wrong code can bounce the payment, and the return can come back at a different rate.

Worth knowing

UK high-street banks often add a margin to the rate as well as a fixed fee, and the margin is usually the bigger cost. A pound buys a large number of rupees, so even a one percent margin is a noticeable sum on a typical transfer.

A worked example (made-up numbers)

Say the mid-market rate is 120.00 rupees to the pound, and your bank converts at 117.60 with no fee. £500 then delivers ₹58,800 instead of ₹60,000: the ₹1,200 difference is a 2% margin you never see on the receipt.
