About USD to CNY
Who uses this route
This is above all a business route: American companies paying Chinese manufacturers and suppliers, and importers checking the cost of an order. Students, families and travelers use it too.
Paying across the border
Supplier payments usually go by international bank wire. Many Chinese suppliers invoice in dollars; if you pay in yuan instead, the conversion happens at your bank's rate, so ask which currency the supplier prefers and what it costs you each way.
Worth knowing
The yuan trades in two markets: onshore in mainland China (CNY), within a band around a daily reference rate set by the central bank, and offshore, mainly in Hong Kong (CNH). The two rates are close but not identical. In China, mobile payment apps are used far more than cards.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 7.1000 yuan to the dollar. A ¥71,000 invoice costs $10,000 at that rate. If your bank converts at 6.9580, 2% worse, the same invoice costs $10,204.08, before any wire fee.
