About USD to INR
Who uses this route
This is one of the busiest money routes in the world. Indians working in the United States send dollars home to family, pay loans and invest in India, and Indian companies are paid in dollars for software and services. Because so much money moves this way, small differences in rate add up quickly.
How the money arrives
Most transfers land in an Indian bank account, often within minutes over IMPS, India's instant bank network, and from there the family can spend it with UPI. Many Indians abroad send into an NRE account, which holds rupees that can later be moved back abroad; an NRO account is for income earned in India.
Worth knowing
Indian amounts are grouped in lakhs and crores: 1,00,000 is one lakh (100,000) and 1,00,00,000 is one crore (10 million). When a service shows the rupee amount, check the commas before you compare.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 94.00 rupees to the dollar. A service with no fee offers 93.06, so $1,000 delivers ₹93,060, ₹940 less than the mid-market ₹94,000. Another charges a $5 fee but gives 93.80: $995 at 93.80 delivers ₹93,331, which is more. Compare what arrives, not the fee.
