Who uses this route
Mexico is the largest destination for money sent from the United States, by millions of Mexican families and workers. Dollars also cross the border for travel, property and business between two closely linked economies.
How the money arrives
Money can be deposited to a Mexican bank account over SPEI, Mexico's instant interbank system, using the recipient's 18-digit CLABE number, or picked up in cash at stores and bank branches. Ask for the CLABE rather than a card number for bank deposits.
Worth knowing
Mexico uses the $ sign for pesos, so a price of $200 in Mexico is 200 pesos, not dollars. In tourist areas, paying in dollars is often accepted, but the shop sets the rate; paying in pesos at the mid-market rate is usually cheaper.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 18.50 pesos to the dollar, and a service offers 18.13, 2% lower, with no fee. $400 then delivers MX$7,252 instead of MX$7,400, a cost of 148 pesos you only see by comparing the rate.
