About CAD to INR
Who uses this route
Canada has a large and fast-growing Indian community, including many students and recent immigrants. Money flows both ways: Canadian dollars go home to family, while rupees come to Canada for tuition and living costs (see INR to CAD).
How the money arrives
Most transfers are paid into an Indian bank account by account number and IFSC. Canadian banks offer international transfers, but their rate margins vary widely, so it's worth comparing the rupee amount from two or three providers before a large transfer.
Worth knowing
Newcomers often send money home soon after arriving, before they know their bank's real cost. Your bank's posted rate for INR is usually well below the mid-market rate shown here; the gap is the margin. Interac e-Transfer, Canada's everyday way to send money between people, only works within Canada, so money for India needs an international transfer.
A worked example (made-up numbers)
Say the mid-market rate is 68.00 rupees to the Canadian dollar, and your bank offers 66.64, 2% lower. CAD 1,000 then delivers ₹66,640 instead of ₹68,000, a cost of ₹1,360 before any fee.
